Bucket Well Design and Functional Differences from Standard Drilled Wells
A bucket well creates its own underground storage, giving it a functional advantage over a standard drilled well. A conventional rotary well uses an 8½-inch borehole. The bucket rig drills a 30-inch diameter hole.
Traditional drilling depends on locating a strong aquifer—typically 3 to 6 feet of quality gravel or a productive rock formation. If the water-bearing zone is thin, the well may not be viable. A bucket well can produce from much smaller veins, including those as thin as 6 inches, and can capture multiple thin zones within the same bore.
The larger diameter also allows the well to perform in marginal conditions. Where a standard well may not yield sufficient water, the 30-inch design creates a reservoir to collect and store water from lower-quality formations. The rig’s hydraulic pulldown capacity also allows penetration into solid rock formations that stop most bucket rigs. Drilling depth reaches up to 120 feet.
After drilling, a 5-inch casing with a stainless steel screen is installed. The 30-inch annular space is filled with clean pea gravel, converting the borehole into an underground reservoir that accumulates water over time.
A bentonite cap is placed above the gravel, and the remaining hole is backfilled with drill cuttings. The process typically produces one to two tri-axle loads of soil. This material can be used on-site or removed for an additional fee.
